Job Description:

  • Under direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, responsible for the handling of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during general to moderately complex surgical procedures
  • Ensures understanding of the assigned surgical procedures being performed and anticipates the needs of the assigned surgeon and surgical team members
  • Also provides service support related to patient preparation, patient transport, and assisting surgical care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs
  • Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures

 
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates and applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques
  • Scrubs on complex surgical procedures such as:
  1. Liver & Multi-visceral Organ Transplants
  2. Endovascular Valve Replacement and/or Aneurysm Repair, TeVAR, FeVAR
  3. Cardiac Surgical Team Membership
  4. Ability to scrub cases involving Cardiopulmonary Bypass e. HIPEC
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs of the patient and surgeon
  • Prepares the operating room by setting table, instruments and supplies according to type of surgery
  • Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports needed repairs appropriately
  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards, and reports and corrects non-compliance
  • Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments
  • May assist RN in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients in the OR
  • May assist RN in positioning and prepping patients
  • Maintains a safe and clean room environment; keeps room free from clutter, cleans and stocks rooms, returns equipment and supplies to designated storage locations, helps maintain cleanliness of assigned areas
  • Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient’s care and privacy
  • Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care
  • Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and communicates in collaboration with the surgical team
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environment standards
  • Actively participates in the shared governance/process to promote team practice
  • Supports administrative and unit governance changes to job role and unit operations
  • Participates in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression
  • Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in on-going department specific educational programs
  • Trains/precepts new employees and students in accordance with assigned orientation/curriculum
  • Actively participates in audit monitors and department task forces
  • Recognizes and participates in continuing education
  • Performs other duties as assigned

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date
  • Surgical Technologist certification required or 3-5 years of experience supporting complex high acuity surgical volume, as defined above, in lieu of a certification

Education:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program
  • Specific knowledge of surgical procedures within the operating room (OR), in addition to knowledge of surgical procedures, practices and techniques in providing patient care and assisting surgeons in the O.R.
