Job Title: Speech Language Pathologist – Outpatient Rehab

JOB SUMMARY:
Assesses and treats patients from infant through geriatric with a variety of speech, language and/or oral pharyngeal sensory – motor in-competencies according to standards of practice of profession, regulatory agencies, and institution.  Assists in managing daily operation of speech – language pathology services.  Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure maximum level of care to patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.    Plans and provides direct speech language pathology care to inpatients and outpatients of all ages with speech, language and/or oral, pharyngeal, and sensory motor in-competencies by evaluating patients, setting goals, implementing, reviewing, and revising treatment program, travels as necessary, to various service locations according to professional, regulatory agencies, and institutional standards. 
2.    Completes necessary documentation related to patient evaluation and treatment including progress notes, discharge summaries, reports to physicians, other disciplines, facilities, and third party payers, lawyers, as requested.  Daily completes charges, billing information, codes, and pre-authorizations as necessary to be reimbursed correctly.  Contacts reimbursement source as necessary to ensure coverage of services, proper forms, information, etc.  Maintains up to date knowledge of reimbursement issues codes and compliance issues. 
3.    Provides counseling and education to patients and their families regarding goals, home programs, treatment, and recommendations in written, verbal and demonstration form.  Documents these activities and the patient/family understanding of the education.  Special attention will be given relevant to patient’s age or impairment of mentation, vision, hearing, etc. when providing any speech service. 
4.    Participates in planning, developing and preparing new programs, services, processes, polices, procedures, forms and organizational improvement.  Updates knowledge of speech-language pathology services via continuing education, reading, networking with peers, etc.
5.    Contacts, consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and referral sources, including physicians, community agencies, nurses, dieticians, other institutions, and third party payors, etc.  To integrate speech service into patient’s total health care program and to promote growth of service to meet community needs. 
6.    Assists in management of daily operations of Speech Language Pathology services including scheduling, productivity logs, updating reimbursement issues, gathering patient information, maintaining equipment, recommending supplies and capital equipment, adhering to revenue and expense budget, etc.   Evaluates and ensures competency of any staff on appropriate forms as requested by supervisor.
7.    Teaches, evaluates, and schedules speech pathology college, school to work, and volunteer students, daily experiences under guidelines of educational institutions and medical center policy. 
8.    Performs other duties as assigned but does including assisting in the evaluation and training of employees and recognizing inappropriate behaviors, serving on committees, preparing for surveys, and administrative projects.
9.    Adheres to dress code.
10.     Functions as a preceptor to orient new employees.
11.     Meets all departmental specific competencies.
12.    Adheres to medical center policies addressing infection control, safety, and personnel guidelines.
13.    Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with the medical center code of conduct and applicable corporate policies and procedures.
14.    Maintains patient confidentiality and treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
15.    Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Skills


The ideal candidate would possess skills in using audiometer, formal tests, tape recorders, and dictaphones.  Skills in patient related software programs necessary and basic computer skills required. 
Basic computer skills including:
1.         Turn your personal computer on and off.
2.    Recognize the four major part of the computer.
3.    Identify and explain the use of the four parts of the standard keyboard.
4.    Recognize the mouse and understand how to use it.
5.    Open and close a program using Windows 95.
6.    Recognize and understand the operator panel of a printer.
7.    Load Paper. 
Education


Kentucky state license is required and BLS training is required after hire.  ASHA Certification of Clinical Competence is preferred for this position.
