Job Summary
The Medical Assistant performs a variety of clinical and administrative duties to support ambulatory patient care. Responsibilities include initial-response screening, patient preparation, vital signs, medication administration, specimen collection, clinical testing, phlebotomy, EHR documentation, patient education, appointment coordination, and assisting providers with examinations, procedures, and treatments according to established protocols, policies, and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform initial-response screening following protocols approved by the supervising provider.
- Escort patients to the room and prepare patients for examination, procedures, and treatment.
- Obtain vital signs and record them in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Obtain and record patient history using critical thinking skills.
- Prepare for, set up, and assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments according to protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Prepare, administer, and document oral and parenteral medications and immunizations as ordered by the supervising provider.
- Document medication administration following the six rights in the EHR while maintaining accurate medication and immunization records.
- Document care provided during the patient visit in the EHR.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies.
- Actively monitor and respond timely to patient requests through telephone encounters, In-Basket messages, and/or MyChart according to identified time frames and document responses in the EHR.
- Enter medication, radiology, and laboratory orders in the EHR for provider sign-off.
- Discharge patients and provide after-visit instructions to the patient and/or caregiver as directed by the provider.
- Enter medication refill orders according to protocol.
- Collect and process specimens.
- Perform CLIA-waived tests.
- Perform electrocardiography, respiratory, and other testing based on department needs.
- Perform phlebotomy, including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
- Serve as a liaison between patients and medical staff in the event of problems or complaints.
- Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments.
- Schedule outpatient procedures.
- Apply third-party and managed care policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Obtain insurance pre-authorizations.
- Enter referrals for provider sign-off.
- Participate in departmental/divisional Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement Programs.
- Practice Standard Precautions, including hand washing and disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Apply principles of aseptic and sterile technique.
- Clean instruments and equipment according to policies and procedures.
- Comply with all HFHS and departmental-specific safety standards.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory standards regarding practice, environment, and documentation.
- Function as a healthcare advocate to meet individual patient needs.
- Educate individuals regarding office policies and procedures.
- Educate patients within the scope of practice and as directed by the supervising physician regarding health maintenance, disease prevention, and compliance with the patient’s treatment plan.
- Identify community resources for health maintenance and disease prevention to meet individual patient needs.
- Uphold the goals, policies, procedures, and expectations of the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS).
- Support the mission, vision, and values of HFHS.
- Maintain examination and treatment rooms, including inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Maintain core and applicable specialty competencies as defined by the Henry Ford Health System.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
Qualifications
Required
One of the following is required:
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with completion of a formal clinical externship of at least 160 hours.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program without completion of a clinical externship, with a minimum of one year of experience in clinical medical assisting within the past five years.
- Current Professionally Recognized Medical Assistant Certification with a minimum of five years of experience in clinical medical assisting.
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
- Licensed Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with at least one year of clinical experience in a clinical medical setting within the past five years.
- Military-trained medical personnel with at least one year of clinical experience in a clinical medical setting within the past five years.
- Minimum 1+ years of experience.
- Required EPIC experience.
- Oncology experience is a plus.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE
- Certified Medical Assistant.
- Emergency Medical Technician.
- Licensed Paramedic.
- Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Professionally Recognized Medical Assistant Certification.
- BLS Certification.
Working Conditions
Position may be based in a hospital or ambulatory/mobile imaging setting. Exposure to radiation, high-voltage equipment, and infectious diseases is possible with appropriate safety precautions. Position may require assisting with patient transfers and moving equipment.
