Title: Surgical Technologist
Location: Onsite – Novi, MI

Shift Hours
• 7:00am to 3:30pm
• On Call 4-6 weekday shifts per 6 weeks (2 hour increments)
• Potential for weekend call but it is not anticipated to be needed at this time. Please make sure candidates are aware of the possibility
• Maximum of 5 days of RTO for the full duration of the contract – preferably not consecutive

• REQUIRED: BLS certification from AHA, High School Diploma or GED equivalent, Minimum 1 year surgical technologist experience, Previous experience in Neuro (Spine and Brain) OR Ortho (Total Joints)

Job Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, the Surgical Technologist I is responsible for the handling of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during general surgical procedures. Ensures understanding of assigned surgical procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the assigned surgical team.
Also provides service support related to patient preparation, patient transport, building services and assisting surgical care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Scrub on general surgical procedures.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up tables, instruments and supplies according to the type of surgery.
  • Assure proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and report needed repairs appropriately.
  • Follow established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Display cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments.
  • Respond to emergent situations according to established procedures and notify the appropriate people.
  • Make necessary supply deliveries to unit and ancillary departments.
  • Maintain a safe and clean room environment.
  • Keep rooms free from clutter, clean and stock rooms, return equipment and supplies to designated storage locations, and help maintain cleanliness of assigned areas.
  • Provide comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient’s care and privacy.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and department care information.
  • Participate in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression.
  • Complete required education in a timely manner and participate in ongoing department-specific educational programs.
  • Actively participate in audit monitors and department task forces.
  • Support administrative and department governance changes to job role and operations.
  • May train/precept new employees in the Surgical Technologist I role within core assignment.
  • Assist RN in admitting, transferring and discharging patients from the OR.
  • Assist leadership in adjusting par levels for efficient supply management.
  • Recognize and participate in continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
  • Minimum 1 year Surgical Technologist experience.
  • Previous experience in Neuro (Spine and Brain) OR Ortho (Total Joints).
  • Physical ability to lift and move patients.
  • Physical ability to push, pull and/or lift case carts, instrument trays and equipment.
  • Ability to work in a patient care area environment which may include exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, potential exposure to information, and hazardous gases.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

  • Current BLS certification from AHA required.
  • If not currently certified, become BLS certified within one month of start date.

Working Conditions
Position may be based in a hospital or ambulatory/mobile imaging setting. Exposure to radiation, high-voltage equipment, and infectious diseases is possible with appropriate safety precautions. Position may require assisting with patient transfers and moving equipment.
